THERE IS ANOTHER WAY
There are proper strategies in place for Cumbria’s Manufacturing, Rural and Visitor Economy, and Nuclear and Energy sectors but where are the discussions about our Digital future? We tried to find out in the usual spots but it didn’t look to be high on their agenda (we couldn’t actually see it anywhere but we might be wrong). In any event, it’s a bit surprising considering that the digital industry is not only the fastest growing but is one of the least impacting in terms of its footprint on the landscape. Many people need…a laptop and that’s about it. Not only that, but this industry and the technologies bring huge opportunity and innovative solutions to many of our economic and rural challenges. We think that Cumbria’s technological future should be more than an afterthought, but a serious alternative consideration and guess what…
WE’RE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO THINK SO

These guys are leading the way. Whether they’re doing it for this region or elsewhere. Right now there is a groundswell of brilliant people making change happen. The future is going to look very different.
VIRTUALLY REALITY?
In the first instance many of our existing jobs will be completely different, your workforce will look different, your systems, logistics, and of course your mobile phone and communications, the list is endless. Cumbria really has the potential not just to follow technological advancements but to be the vanguard. Honestly. Simple things such as vibrant co-working spaces and excellent connectivity go a long way to providing a nursery for ideas and industries of this kind. Cumbria can be and should be at the cutting edge because we possess the two things that these industries need, attractive places to live, and big industries to work with. We have them both, in abundance. There is more to Cumbria and the Lake District than being a tourist destination with manufacturing on it’s radius there is an opportunity for us to make more of our assets and become greater than the sum of our parts. The digital industries could be the glue that knits the seemingly disparate and conflicting ways Cumbria makes money together, harmonising and preserving the landscape whilst attracting and encouraging talent of the highest order. Imagine an alternative industry for our own young people to look up to, right here in Cumbria. A future that will be relevant to them.
Just a thought.
