It’s not every day you get to trade your desk for breathtaking views of Derwentwater. Last month, we dived into the world of photography at LA23NET’s Picture Perfect in Portinscale – and it was as dreamy as it sounds.

Hosted at the stunning Lingholm Estate, nestled on the shores of Derwentwater, the workshop was led by professional photographer Tom Kay, who shared his insider tips for capturing those standout shots.

Whether you were a total beginner or a content pro, there was something for everyone. From snapping social content, to product and portrait photography, Tom discussed techniques that could be applied to any business, brand, or personal project.

So, what did we learn?

One of the biggest takeaways? Composition is everything. Tom introduced us to one of photography’s simple but most effective tools: the Rule of Thirds. By placing key elements at the intersections of a grid, the viewer’s eye is naturally drawn into the image, giving your photos real impact.

We were encouraged to move around, explore the estate, try different angles, and experiment with perspective. Getting low can dramatically alter the feel of a shot – some of the most striking images from the day were taken close to the ground.

And while it might feel natural to shoot everything in portrait mode, especially for social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, we learned that variety is key. Landscape formats often make better use of the frame and give your image room to breathe.

Bonus tip: always check that your horizon is level – especially near water!

Tom also reminded us that great lighting doesn’t need to be fancy. In fact, soft natural light is often more flattering for portraits than bright sunlight. And you don’t need a studio set-up to get creative – fairy lights, torches, or even closing a curtain to control the mood can transform your shot.

We explored how backgrounds can make or break a photo. Whether you’re shooting people or products, the background should complement your subject, not distract from it. A clean, relevant backdrop helps focus attention where it matters most.

And let’s talk about product photography – we played around using portrait mode for that blurred ‘pro’ look, and even sprayed objects with water for that glossy, realistic finish. It’s amazing what a few small tweaks can do.

Of course, no LA23NET event would be complete without good food and great company – and brunch at The Glasshouse did not disappoint. Think delicious food, scenic views, and the perfect setting to keep the creativity (and conversation) flowing.

We wrapped up the day feeling inspired, empowered, and maybe even a little bit camera-obsessed.

And the best part? All photos in this blog were taken by the attendees – proof that with the right tools, tips, and a bit of practice, anyone can create something beautiful.

We’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who turned up with curiosity, creativity, and plenty of networking know-how.

And a special shout out to our brilliant sponsors Harrison Drury, NXT Recruitment, The Cumberland, and Edwin Thompson – events like this wouldn’t be possible without your support.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next event – and in the meantime, keep snapping 📸
