The University of Cumbria’s Vice Chancellor Professor Julie Mennell, and Professor of Practice Jackie Arnold MBE will be speaking at #LA23NET on Wednesday 10th October. The women are undoubtedly two of Cumbria’s leading ladies, both driving positive and measurable change for the county. Prof. Julie Mennell and Jackie Arnold MBE will will be talking about the opportunities available for businesses to innovate alongside, and collaborate with universities. In addition to the collaborative opportunities there are of course thousands of highly skilled people leaving the University of Cumbria each year, a talent pool many of Cumbria’s businesses would do well to engage with. Professor Julie Mennell – Vice Chancellor of University of Cumbria

Prior to becoming Vice Chancellor, Julie held Deputy Vice Chancellor positions (Development and Academic) at the University of Sunderland over a six year period.

Julie held the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) for the University of Sunderland for five years, having responsibility for the academic and research provision, student experience and graduate outcomes, student and learning support and quality assurance and enhancement. Her more recent Development brief encompassed leadership of the university’s development activities including international and transnational activities, student recruitment and product development.

She has held senior positions at Northumbria and Teesside universities and is a former President and honorary member of the North East Association of Science Education and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, The Chartered Society for Forensic Sciences, Institute of Measurement & Control and the RSA.

Julie has an international reputation in the field of forensic and crime scene science, having made significant contributions to forensic science strategy, education and workforce development in the UK and overseas, including her serving on the Home Office Forensic Science Advisory Council and the Skills for Justice Forensic Science Occupational Skills Committee.

A mathematics and physics graduate from the University of Leeds, Julie holds a PhD in Applied Physics from Teesside University, focused on the radiometric characterisation of pneumatic suspensions of particulate solids, and a PGC Learning & Teaching in HE.

Jackie Arnold MBE

 

Jackie Arnold MBE FCMA is a member of the Vice Chancellor’s Executive and is head of the University’s new Institute for Industrial Practice.  Jackie is leading the work to ensure the offer of the University is aligned to the education and skills requirements of the businesses in Cumbria and the broader region.  Key to achieving this are the strategic relationships with key employers in the county, Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership and other Further Education and Higher Education providers which enable the University to deliver in the best interests of its students and employers, developing a workforce fit to deliver and addressing the issues of social mobility which have constrained the development of communities in the past.

A Chartered Accountant, Jackie has previously spent time in practice, public sector and private sector businesses and has held roles as Managing Director, a Chief Accountant before subsequently being Head of Strategy at BAE SYSTEMS.  Currently Jackie is Corporate Responsibility lead at the BAE submarine yard in Barrow-in-Furness. Jackie ensures BAE works in partnership with the community to create the environment that allows the business to deliver its plan whilst assuring the community benefits too.

Jackie is Vice Chair of Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership and a member of the North West Business Leadership Team.  She is also a Non-Executive Director of the Cumberland Building Society and an Executive in Residence at Lancaster University. In 2016 Jackie was awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to the Cumbrian economy.
